About Exchange
The National Exchange Club was founded in 1911. Since that time, local clubs across the country have served their communities through four Areas of Impact: Prevention of Child Abuse, Americanism, Community Service, and Youth Programs. Exchange also supports a national network of Exchange Club Centers for The Prevention of Child Abuse. National Headquarters, located in Toledo, OH, supports those clubs, members, and centers.
Position overview
The Social Media & Communications Specialist runs Exchange's day-to-day social media and helps tell the story of a 115-year-old service organization to members, prospective members, and the communities clubs serve.
This is a hands-on role. You'll shoot and edit short video, write posts and articles, build email campaigns, and turn National priorities into content that clubs can actually use. Our members span several generations and are more likely to share a Facebook post than follow a TikTok trend, so the right candidate knows how to meet an audience where it is, while still reaching the next generation of members.
You'll work closely with the Director of Communications and support the CEO, the National President, and National Headquarters staff.
Key responsibilities
Social media and community
- Plan, create, and publish content for Exchange's channels, with Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, TikTok, and YouTube as the core platforms.
- Keep a monthly content calendar tied to National priorities, program areas, and observances and events.
- Respond to comments and messages promptly, and flag sensitive issues or member concerns to the Director of Communications.
- Write posts so they're findable in platform search, not only in the feed, using clear keywords, captions, and alt text.
Support for local clubs
- Build ready-to-use social toolkits (graphics, captions, short videos, and templates) that clubs can post on their own pages with little effort.
- Gather and share member- and club-created photos, videos, and stories, with permission, so the National channels reflect what clubs are actually doing.
- Create content for membership growth campaigns that helps clubs recruit, including promotion of the Exchange mobile app.
Video, audio, and visuals
- Shoot and edit short-form vertical video (under 90 seconds) for Reels, Shorts, and similar formats, with captions on every video.
- Cut clips and promotional graphics from Talk Exchange, Exchange's podcast, and support production of episodes as needed.
- Photograph and film events, including on-site coverage at the National Convention.
Writing and publications
- Write and edit articles for the national magazine, member newsletters, Center Stage (the newsletter for Exchange Club Center staff), press releases, and the website.
- Build and send email campaigns in Constant Contact and keep contact lists clean.
- Follow Exchange's brand and style standards, including correct use of the organization's name, logos, and program names.
Responsible use of tools and content
- Use AI tools to speed up brainstorming, drafting, captioning, and editing, while checking facts, keeping Exchange's voice, and maintaining integrity of sensitive information.
- Confirm usage rights before publishing music, images, footage, and partner or sponsor logos and marks.
- Make content accessible by default: captions, alt text, readable type, and sufficient color contrast.
Required skills and experience
- 1–3 years of experience in social media, communications, marketing, or journalism. Strong internships, freelance work, or volunteer roles count.
- A portfolio with at least one short video you shot or edited, written samples, and social content you created.
- Clear, warm writing that adapts to different audiences, from a 30-word caption to a 600-word article.
- Working skill in short-form video editing (such as CapCut, Premiere Pro, or Descript) and design (such as Canva or Adobe Express).
- Experience with a scheduling tool (such as Meta Business Suite, Later, or Buffer) and an email platform (such as Constant Contact).
- Comfort reading platform analytics and explaining what the numbers mean in plain language.
- Hands-on experience using AI tools for content work, with good judgment about where they help and where they don't.
- Strong organization and follow-through on a small team, including handling several deadlines at once without close supervision.
- Availability for extended work hours during peak periods, and minimal travel
Preferred qualifications
- Experience with a nonprofit, association, or membership organization
- Event photography or video experience, including live or same-day social coverage.
- Podcast or audio editing experience.
- Familiarity with WordPress or a similar website content system.
- Knowledge of accessibility practices for digital content.
- Experience creating content for audiences of different ages, including older adults.
- A degree in communications, marketing, journalism, or a related field, or equivalent experience.
What we offer
- Work that matters: our content helps recruit members, support the prevention of child abuse, and strengthen communities across the country.
- Real ownership on a small team, with room to try new ideas and see the results.
- A flexible part-time schedule.
- A generous holiday schedule.
- Access to the tools you need to do the job well.
- Experience covering a national convention and working directly with national leadership.
