Assistance Dogs Service Dog Trainer

The Ability Center, a Center for Independent Living (CIL), is on a mission to build the most disability-friendly community in the nation. The Assistance Dogs Program uses science-driven training techniques that empower dogs to actively engage in the learning process and achieve high-quality outcomes. Trainers work collaboratively as part of a team to meet Assistance Dogs International standards. Our service dogs undergo a comprehensive, two-year training process to prepare for roles as service dogs, skilled companion dogs, facility dogs, and agility dogs. Training takes place in a variety of environments—including our training center, public settings, and correctional facilities. This position requires a flexible schedule, including evenings and weekends.

 Key Responsibilities:

  • Schedule and teach training classes for all phases of training utilizing set lesson plans.
  • Conduct public readiness testing on dogs in training as necessary, document results in database system.
  • Assist in training Final Training Dogs, including teaching specialized skills, going on outings, etc.
  • Maintain training logs and record dog’s progress.
  • Schedule private lessons with fosters needing additional training.
  • Schedule and conduct home visits for new volunteers as needed.
  • Schedule and conduct dog meet and greets as needed.
  • Assist with training protocols for the prison training program as scheduled and provide instruction to inmate handlers
  • Evaluate and set goals for each dog you are training monthly.
  • Develop and implement behavioral plans and provide corrective actions.
  • Verify all appropriate vaccines and preventatives are given to dogs in your classes.
  • Attend Ability Center graduations, trainings, events, outside community events, and seminars.
  • Travel is required using personal and/or company vehicle.

 Your Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent required; associate’s degree or formal education in dog training preferred.
  • 1–3 years of hands-on experience in dog handling or training, preferably with service animals.
  • Preferred knowledge of basic and advanced dog obedience skills, service dog tasks and training techniques.
  • Ability to develop and implement dog training plans and instruct others with diverse background and skill levels including professionals, volunteers, and inmate handlers
  • Proficient with technology, including web-based video conferencing, email, and Microsoft Office programs.
  • Valid driver’s license required.
  • All candidates must pass an FBI/BCII background check, drug screen, and physical if position is offered.
  • Familiarity with disabilities, including those related to mobility and mental health, is helpful

Essential Physical Demands:

  • Frequent movement between office spaces, meeting areas, and between buildings is required. The role demands regular physical activity indoors and outdoors.
  • The employee must safely test, transport, and train dogs using equipment such as leashes, medicines, balance harnesses, wheelchairs, and training tools like clickers.
  • Lifting of up to 75 pounds, including food and supplies, and handling dogs up to 100 pounds both on and off leash, occasionally near cleaning agents and disinfectants.
  • This position may require operating a personal or company-owned vehicle to transport dogs, supplies, or materials
